<u><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;">THE WINDING ENGINES
AND ENGINE MEN <o:p></o:p></span></u></div>
<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
<u><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;">OF CHATTERLEY
WHITFIELD</span></u><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;"> No greater collection of steam driven
winding engines could be found in the land.
Five shafts, all in a row and all on one site was unusual and formed a
huge deep pit mining colliery. From the
smaller engines of Middle Pit, Winstanley and Platt Pit to the gigantic
monoliths of Hesketh and Institute. They were a magnificent spectacle to see
and hear operating, lowering and drawing coal, men and materials with speed and
efficiency.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;"> The
Royal Navy called them 'grease monkeys' but that job description at Whitfield
was 'oiler and cleaner'. At the age of
15 in 1949 I was just called an 'oil lad' and in my teen years it was my job to
clean, oil and grease those engines under the watchful eye of the winding
engine men (operators). They had cause
to be wary. Shortly before my arrival
one such 'oil lad' had been killed instantly in the crank race at the Middle
Pit. I eventually became a 'winder' at
the minimum age of 22 but I left the industry to pursue another career in
1960. It was during this period, the
fifties, that Whitfield was having its 'heyday' with coal production at its
highest serving the country, which was still struggling after the war years.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;"> The
winders were almost a race apart and were no doubt selected for their sobriety
and trustworthiness before they developed their considerable skill. In some
cases the job ran in families with fathers and even grandfathers having done
the same job. In those days they all
worked a 7 day week in rotating shifts to cover the 24 hours at the 3 coal
drawing pits, Hesketh, Institute and Middle Pit. A spare winder to stand in occasionally would
be available and another would operate the Winstanly engine on a single day
shift. Very often they would work 12
hours between 2 of them to cover a colleague off with illness.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;"> The
winders I knew were all dedicated individuals but were often 'crusty' and would
not suffer fools gladly. As an 'oil lad'
I more than once felt the brunt of their wrath if my work was perceived to be
below par. These men were responsible
for the engine houses and the engines within, showcases of cleanliness and
smooth running. They were justly and sometimes obsessively proud of their
engines.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;"> Coal
owners and later during my time, the National Coal Board managers, would often
proudly bring VIP visitors to see the engines and were usually amazed at the
spectacle. It was said 'you could eat
your dinner off the engines'.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;"> The
Hesketh engine was undoubtedly the top of the bill as a show-piece and it is of
great sadness that it is in a rusty, parlous state at this time (2017). However, it is still intact and hopefully it
may be restored sometime in the future.
The forty or more years it has been out of use has taken its toll. The sheer size and dimensions are
considerable when compared to the diameter of the car combustion cylinder which
is 2 to 3 inches in diameter with a 5 inch stroke whereas the Hesketh's 2 cylinders have an internal diameter of 36
inches and a stroke of 6 feet! The drum,
like a bobbin onto which the winding ropes (steel cables) were wound and
unwound is a semi-conical shape. This
allowed the smaller diameter part of the drum to work like a lower gear for the
rope, drawing its load out of the bottom of the deep shaft and gradually easing
and speeding up as it rose and gained momentum.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;"> The
Institute engine was no less remarkable if not quite having the allure of the
more modern Hesketh engine. In fact, the
basic dimensions were the same but of a simpler and older design, being
installed in the 19th century and of a marine type sometimes used in
early steam ships. It was nicknamed the
'the Cockshead' because of the beak like pointed structure at the top of the
headgear. This was amazingly, a vertical
engine, unlike all the others at Whitfield which were horizontal. It was housed in five floors, two of which
were below ground level. The drum,
weighing 50 tons, was a simple parallel shape, like a bobbin and was suspended
on the top floor of the building. It was
a powerful experience to stand near the engine man on the ground floor,
watching and almost feeling the hot piston rods working the upward cranks to
the hissing and puffing of super heated steam. The supporting walls were
immense but nevertheless the building shuddered during the operation of the engine. The engine and engine house
were no less clean and spotless than the Hesketh with similar tiled floors to
be mopped and cleaned to kitchen standard.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;"> The
oil lad was nearly always out of sight of the winder at the Institute and
oiling and greasing took place during the momentary pauses at the end of each
run (top to bottom with the cages and vice versa). The winder had to rely on
shouted signals from the lad on other floors to safely start the next run. What 'Health and Safety' would make of this
nowadays is something to ponder. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;"> Sadly
the Institute was demolished and removed.
A great loss to history.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;"> The
Middle Pit, along with the Hesketh and Institute, was also coal drawing. It was a shallower shaft and the engine was
smaller but it had 3 decker cages and was extremely busy, swiftly lifting a
seemingly never ending stream of laden coal tubs.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;"> Like
the other two coal drawing pits, the night shift was always a busy time with
constant ongoing maintenance of the shaft and equipment and during the night
the winder himself would, during quiet times, clean various parts of the engine
that could not be accessed during daytime operations<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;"> This
engine has been demolished and removed.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;"> The
Winstanley Pit had the smallest winding engine.
It was not used for coal drawing but was near to and secondary to the
Middle Pit and at the same depth. It was
of course mandatory to have at least 2 shafts to each mine. This had enclosed headgear with an airlock
system of doors. Fresh air was drawn
down the open Middle Pit out through a vent near the top of the closed
Winstanly Shaft by the use of a steam driven fan engine.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;"> It
should be said here that a similar air flow system was operated with the other
3 shafts. The Hesketh being open and the
Institute and Platt Pits both being enclosed and air locked. A powerful small steam engine in a separate
building drew the air through this deep mine complex. Such was the importance
of maintaining a clean air flow that there was a separate engine (unused) in
another building near the Platt Pit in case of a failure or major maintenance
to the main fan engine.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;"> It
was of course a legal requirement that all coal mines should have at least 2
shafts. It was equally important to have
an air flow system and a secondary means of escape from below.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;"> Historically
these changes were embraced legally following a major disaster in 1862 at
Hartley colliery near Newcastle upon Tyne.
Almost unbelievably this deep mine had only one shaft which was divided
throughout its depth by a wooden shuttering construction which allowed one side
to be used for lowering and lifting men, materials and coal while the other
side contained vertical pipes which pumped water out of the workings below. All mines would fill with water if not pumped
out. The pump was operated by a huge
beam engine. The heavy cast iron beam, which worked in an up and down motion
over the shaft, broke off and plunged down the shaft taking with it all the
dividing woodwork and crushing it down to about a 3rd of the shaft
depth where it stopped in a tangled mess, blocking the shaft. All 204 men and boys working below perished
before a rescue could be made. The
youngest was 10 and the oldest 71. It is
hard to believe that some callous coal owners needed the law to ensure they had
two shafts. The life of a coal miner in
those days must have been regarded as cheap.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;"> Even
in my day coal mining was a hazardous business and many was the time that I saw
injured men (sometimes fatally) brought out of the pit on stretchers.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;"> Lastly,
the Platt Pit is probably the most intact at this time and as I mentioned
before it had enclosed and air-locked headgear. To this day its distinctive
green painted enclosure panels are visible.
It shared common airways with the Hesketh and Institute. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;"> The
engine was much smaller than the Hesketh and Institute engines but larger than
the Middle Pit and Winstanly engines. It
was occasionally used for materials but was mainly for safety in the fifties.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;"> Finally
I should mention some of the personalities involved with winding engines at
that time. As I mentioned previously,
some of the winders ran through
families. My father Eddie
Sherratt was a winder at the Institute and later at the Hesketh. His father was a winder at the Institute and
so was his grandfather. The latter was
nicknamed 'Peg-leg' due to his loss of a
leg in a dreadful accident when a cage he was entering at the pit bottom
rose before he was fully inside,
destroying his leg.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;"> The
Simpsons were another such family.
Father and then son (Ted) operated the Middle Pit engine, the latter during part of the time I was there as
an 'oil lad'. Another greatly experienced winder there was Cecil Johnson, a
dignified and kindly man who operated with great skill. Another father and son were Fred and his son
Alf Rhodes who operated the Hesketh and Middle Pit engines respectively.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;"> Among
the larger than life personalities were Tom Boulton (Hesketh) and Harry
Holdcroft (Institute). Tom Boulton's
brother, Syd, was not a winder but is
worthy of mention as not only was he a very efficient engineer, he
specialised in hydraulics and took part in promoting Whitfield's museum after
its closure as a working colliery. He
was an ex submariner.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;"> Claude
Winter was another highly talented engineer who specialised in reshaping the
white metal bearings in the engines, a major undertaking when the drum and
spindle shaft had to be raised out of the bearing beds. There are many others
worthy of mention and to their memories I apologise.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 13.0pt;"> Personally
I am not sorry to see the end of deep coal mining which has always been dusty
and dangerous, although many would disagree.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QKziV0ATvW4/Ug9FNQ65U1I/AAAAAAAAEgU/ASQLEF5MHb0/s1600/Hesketh+Sun+Beam.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QKziV0ATvW4/Ug9FNQ65U1I/AAAAAAAAEgU/ASQLEF5MHb0/s320/Hesketh+Sun+Beam.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #707070; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 22px; margin-left: 4em; margin-top: 2em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; width: 477.75px;">
It has not been possible to go underground at Chatterley Whitfield for many years because the passages are flooded.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #707070; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 22px; margin-left: 4em; margin-top: 2em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; width: 477.75px;">
More recently, Stoke-on-Trent City Council, as landowner, has imposed severe restrictions on visiting Whitfield because of concerns over safety. Some buildings are in a dangerous condition and almost all buildings are closed for the foreseeable future because there may be asbestos in them.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #707070; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 22px; margin-left: 4em; margin-top: 2em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; width: 477.75px;">
Currently, the only way for members of the public to visit the site is on the annual Heritage Open Day in September. Sometimes, special visits for school groups can be arranged, but these must be arranged several months in advance.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #707070; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 22px; margin-left: 4em; margin-top: 2em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; width: 477.75px;">
Some of the land around the perimeter of Chatterley Whitfield, however, is open to the public, and you can get an excellent view of the site from the top of the nearby tip.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #707070; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 22px; margin-left: 4em; margin-top: 2em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; width: 477.75px;">

As you can see from the above at our AGM in November there were a
number of changes to the committee. After many years Jim asked for
personal reasons if he could step down as Chair and Don superbly stepped
up and was voted in as our new Chair. For almost the same reasons Mick
stepped down as secretary and Alex stepped up and took over as
secretary. Geoff remains as our Treasurer.<br /> <br /> I am sure we would
all want to thank Jim and Mick for their amazing help in keeping the
Friends together and in help making the Annual “Heritage Open Day” such a
success. A hearty thanks to them both. You will also be gratified to
know that both of them remain loyal and active members of the committee,
which is the best possible outcome.<br /> <br /> One major change decided
at the AGM is good news for the members. Annual fees have been reduced
from the 1st of January. See more later.<br /> <br /> Before we go onto the
interesting stuff I would just like to say that winter and spring have
brought a number of sad events to the members of the committee. Our
thoughts are with them during these difficult times and it is an amazing
tribute to them that they have all continued to support the Friends.
Again, thank you and we all have been thinking of you.<br /> <br /> At the
end of the AGM we were privileged to be given a beautiful hard backed
portfolio of pages listing those that died in the pit. It was done as a
project by Angela Gilder, a superb contribution to the archives of
Chatterley Whitfield, Angela, thank you so much. If any of you want to
see the pictures, I have a DVD of them and the original is safe stored
off site. The project was for Angela’s Masters Degree and was in
photography, here are a couple of examples of her work.<br /> <br />
Great News! As we speak a new Web-site is being designed for us by
the Students of Staffordshire University. We decided that the old
website was difficult to keep up as few of us knew anything about adding
information to it, so your committee made a commitment to have a new,
easy to use website. None of us felt competent to do this and so we
invested some money in getting the young (well 18 -24 year olds)
students to develop a new website. This should be up and running in time
for information about the next heritage open day. The committee, on
your behalf have visited the university on several occasions to help the
students understand our needs. In the end 11 different designs were
offered for selection, each one had thought of ideas that other groups
hadn’t and it was a difficult choice. I said to<br /> Alistair the lead lecturer, “I could work easily with any of them”, so well done to the students, a great job thank you<br /> To cut cost down, would members like to send their e-mail addresses to Geoff Oakes,<br /> e-mail on front page, thank you.<br /> <br /> DATES FOR YOUR DIARY<br /> <br /> 1. Heritage Open Day 14th September 2012. to be confirmed. WE NEED YOU TO VOLUNTEER!!!!!<br /> <br /> 2. Apedale Heritage Event 15th 16th June we will be represented, more info from Jim Worgan.<br /> <br /> 3. Moseley Railways “Tracks to the Trenches” 12 -14th Sept 2014 <br /> <br /> 4. Next Committee meetings to be held are, Thursday 2nd May 2013. and <br /> Thursday 4th July 2013. at Chatterley Whitfield at 10:00am.<br /> <br />
Returning to subscriptions, it was decided at the AGM the subscriptions
should be reduced to £5-00. However, despite this huge reduction very
few of you have paid the new reduced rate, so come on people please pay
up. We have to live with Geoff getting set at the state of the bank
account!!! The money is used to support the heritage day, the
newsletter and for teas/coffee/ soup provided for anyone who wants to
turn up to our Thursday meetings. Why not come along!!!!!<br /> The cost of subscriptions will be as follow:- £5-00. Each for everyone children free.<br /> Corporate members is still £50-00.<br /> <br />
Don’t forget Heritage Open Day 14th September 2013. We need you to
help with guiding, marshalling etc. so if you think you can give up some
time to help us. It is always a great day and the general public who
come along all say how much they enjoy it. So come on and join a happy
band of people all ready to make 2013 even better then 2012.</span></span>Advanced Bikerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15825323867735601084noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1194772423322323389.post-52666556676046073462013-03-15T01:20:00.000-07:002013-03-15T01:20:32.746-07:00Chatterley Whitfield Belts, Bells and the Bullhurst<h2>
Belts, Bells and the Bullhurst</h2>
<h4 class="heading">
by Barbara Harding</h4>
<div class="blockquote">
It was to be the ultimate experience for my two friends and I, when in 1953 we went on
an underground visit to the Bullhurst seam in Chatterley Whitfield colliery. At that
time I was one of only three girls working in the area laboratory based at the pit.<br />
When the visit was first mentioned, we were all very excited, if a little apprehensive.
However, Gladys Walker, Joyce Dawson, and I were very keen to experience
what it was like to work underground. We were told to bring in some old clothes. I had
a boiler suit and a pair of strong but comfortable shoes.<br />
We were to go underground after work on Friday evening. My boss Mr Walter Robertson, the Area
Chief Scientist, would accompany us. We all felt thrilled by this wonderful opportunity to
see pitmen and pit work at first hand.<br />
The visit started when I was given a black pit helmet that had to be adjusted to stop
it falling around my ears. Then it was off to the lamp house to have a lamp battery fitted
on my belt. The light itself was placed into a slot at the front of my helmet. They weighed
a ton. When we reached the top of the shaft, unlike the miners we weren’t searched.
The banksman only asked if we were carrying contraband like cigarettes, or if we had any
means of lighting one. We all said no.<br />
We were then allowed to step into the cage and nervously inquired if it was to go down as
fast as when it carried the miners we were reassured that it wouldn’t. The chain safety
gate was locked into position; the banksman rang the bell to tell the winding engine man
it was safe to go.<br />
Suddenly the cage plunged downwards into the dark shaft, and for a moment I felt I was
floating like an astronaut. I hung on tightly to handle at the side. Even with my eyes
tightly shut, I was filled with nervous excitement as the cage rattled against the
guide ropes. Then I slowly opened my eyes and was filled with terror - it was pitch black!<br />
Mr Robertson turned on his lamp and I saw the shaft walls screaming past I can tell you I
was very relieved when I felt the cage slowing down before coming to a stop in the pit
bottom. For a few seconds we sort of bounced as we hung in the shaft. Then the onsetter
lifted the safety gates and I walked out.<br />
As I entered the pit bottom it took a short while to get my bearings. My first impression
was one of surprise. I was stunned to see everything was painted white. There were
girders supporting the roof going up to a point. It felt like being in church.<br />
From the pit bottom we all made our way along the roadway, to a set of ventilation doors,
where a bell was rung. It was answered by another bell from the other side. Then the
first door in a set of three was opened and we made our way through. We were told to
watch our feet, as the floor had a deep covering of white stone dust. I was told this dust
was to prevent explosions of coal dust. Then I noticed something moving in the dust and
was told that it was a steel haulage rope and to be careful because there had been many
broken ankles from it.<br />
We then walked to the man riding station where were told to get into a low-lying wagon, and
lie almost horizontal. Again bells were rung and the wagon started to move along the
dark narrow passage. As I lay there with the light from my lamp illuminating the arches
over my head I wondered how many millions of tons of rock there was above me, I can tell
you it was strange feeling. But it passed and we were soon laughing and joking enjoying
the experience. Finally the wagons stopped we alighted and started to make our way towards
the workings. As we came nearer to the face it seemed that bells were ringing all the
time.<br />
Then I could see lights up ahead, we had reached where the men were working. It was quite
warm and dusty. I had to crawl on hands and knees along a short passage that took me on to
the face. The first facemen I came to shouted, “Careful lads, the girls are here”.<br />
The nearest collier to me said” Any good with a pick”, I replied, “Pick, shovel, and
paint brush, that’s me”. Quick as a flash, a pick was put in my hand. I took a mighty
swing and embedded the pick deep into the coal. The problem was no matter how hard I tried
I found it impossible to pull it out!<br />
The collier offered to help, but no, I struggled to remove it myself. At last, with a
mighty tug, out came the pick together with a large lump of coal. I was delighted, and
said I was going to take it home. Another collier said, “Bloody hell, she’s got more off
than I have all shift”. They told me that I couldn’t take that much home as it was too
heavy, so they gave me a small lump in its place. I was delighted and still have it
today.<br />
The coal was being moved along the face by a chain conveyor. Face men were cutting coal
off the face with their picks, or shovelling it on to the chain. Others were setting
steel bars and props to support the roof. The noise from the machinery was deafening. At
one point, we all switched off our lamps; it felt peculiar there in the total darkness,
like I was back in the 1700’s. We stayed on the face for almost two hours.<br />
On the way back out from the face I was shown the main haulage dip. It appeared to me
that there was a continuous movement of full and empty wagons coupled together in groups
of three rattling and grumbling up and down at a brisk rate. From there we retraced our
steps back to the pit bottom, again accompanied by the inevitable bells. We all
returned safely to the surface, although a little tired I felt fabulous, and had enjoyed
the experience immensely.<br />
I was very dirty, but that didn’t matter, in fact I was quite glad, as it was part of the
whole experience. I wanted to go to the showers block in the pithead baths, but the
manager insisted that we use his shower. I felt really disappointed that we couldn’t use the
men’s baths, as it would have finished off the day.<br />
From then on whenever I was typing reports of my underground visit it gave me
greater understanding of the terminology.<br />
Although there were times during my period underground when I was apprehensive, I could
not have been in better hands; I knew that I was safe and would be well looked after. I
still can’t understand why the miners would want to work half a mile down a shaft and a
mile underground, with all the dangers of dust, gas, water, and roof falls. I said it then
and I say it now “Miners are worth all the money in the world to go down there and work
as they do”. I think the abiding memory I have is of the camaraderie among these brave
men.<br />
They really are the salt of the earth.<br />

The date at which coal was first mined systematically in the Whitfield area
is not known, but there are references to mining in the manor of Tunstall from
the late 13th century onwards. A local tradition claims that the monks of the
Hulton Abbey came to nearby Ridgeway during the 14th and 15th centuries, to
work coal from some of the eight seams outcropping half a mile east of
Whitfield. These early workings were known as 'footrails' and were driven down
from the surface.<br />
<br />
Shaw's 'History of the Potteries' tells us that in 1750, Ralph Leigh of
Burslem collected coal from Whitfield twice a day. His six horses each carried
between two and three hundredweights of coal along lanes which were impassable
to wagons. These draughts of coal were each worth about seven pence (3p) and
Leigh received one shilling (5p) a day for his services.<br />
In 1838, Thomas Hargreaves conducted a survey and valuation of the colliery
at Whitfield on behalf of its proprietors, representatives of the late William
Harrison. At this time there were an engine house, coal wharf, carpenters' shop
and brickworks on the site. The buildings, machinery and coal stocks were
collectively values at £154 7s. 6d. (£154.37.5p).<br />
Hugh Henshall Williamson, a local man who lived nearby at Greenway Bank
Hall, was mining in the Whitfield area by 1853. His mining activities at this
period are somewhat uncertain, but it is most probable that Williamson first
made use of existing mining sites and shallow shafts. In 1853 it is fairly
certain that he was working the Cockshead and Seven Feet Banbury seams at the
Ridgeway footrails. It is also probable that he was using the Bellringer shaft,
which was 79 yards deep, to work the bellringer seam, and the Ragman and Engine
shafts, each 50 yards deep, to work the Ragman seam.<br />
In 1854 the local coalmasters forced the North Staffordshire Railway Company
to construct the Biddulph Valley branch line after proposing to build the
railway themselves, a situation which the NSR did not favour. Work on the
construction of the railway did not start until 1858, the line being partly
opened for mineral traffic in 1859, and completed in 1860, passing within half
a mile of Whitfield.<br />
Anticipating the completion of the railway, Hugh Henshall Williamson sank
the Prince Albert shaft to work the Holly Lane and Hardmine seams and another
shaft to work both the Bowling Alley and Ten Feet seams. On the opening of the
railway he immediately constructed his own rail link from the shafts at
Whitfield and footrails at Ridgeway, to Chell Sidings alongside the NSR
Biddulph Valley Line. Wagons loaded with coal were lowered by brake down to the
sidings and horses were used to haul empty wagons back up to the colliery.<br />

The members of the Friends all have different reasons for joining. Some used to work at
Whitfield while others worked in the mining industry elsewhere. Some live or used to live
nearby while others have never been to the city. Some are interested in the site’s past, and
others in its future.<br />
We have one thing in common, however. We don’t want to this important site to be forgotten.<br />
The Association started in 2001 as part of the project by English Heritage, English Partnerships,
Stoke-on-Trent City Council and others to regenerate the site. We are independent of any other
organisation, but we are a member of the Chatterley Whitfield Partnership.<br />
We have a formal constitution with elected officials and a committee. Our Patron is Sir Neil
Cossons OBE, who used to be one of the directors of the Chatterley Whitfield Mining Museum and
was the Chairman of English Heritage during the first six years of this regeneration project.<br />
